4oz self raising flour or plain flour with 2 teaspoons baking powder
Half tsp bicarbonate of soda
2 tbs warmed golden syrup
quarter pint milk or milk and water
Sift the flour or flour and baking powder, bicarb and salt.
Heat the syrup and milk (or milk and water), pour over the flour and beat well.
Pour into a well greased 1lb loaf tin and bake in the centre of a moderately hot (190-200C, 375-400F, Gas Mark 5-6) to hot (220C, 425F, Gas Mark 7)oven for 30 minutes or util firm
