Let me introduce you to my larder…


Sunday here at Castle Rationing… is menu and shoppping list making day. Over and over Ive posted on checking whats available, checking what youve got and so on… so heres a live example that we practice what we preach… let me introduce you to what we have in the kitchen today and what I’ll be using in next weeks menu (and what I therefore dont have to buy again thus saving money)…

The Freezer

  • Frozen raspberries
  • 2 full packs of streaky bacon
  • 5 home made stock pots
  • Cod fillets and haddock fillets

The Pantry/ larder cupboard

  • Prunes, dates and raisins
  • 2kg plain white flour & 1/2 kg wholemeal flour
  • 1/2 loaf of bread
  • 1x 250g jar of mixed fruit jam
  • 1 tub of birds custard
  • 3 tins of baked beans
  • 1/2 tube of rich tea biscuits
  • 4 tins of corned beef
  • 2 tins of mushy peas that must be a year old by now
  • a small box of yorkshire tea… because I refuse to drink the cheap stuff
  • 1x 1.5 bottle of blackcurrant & apple concentrate
  • 2.5kg white sugar & 750g brown sugar
  • enough porrige oats to refloat the titanic
  • 2/3 of a 500g bag of split red lentils
  • a smidgen of shop bought smash from ages ago
  • vegetable oil

The Fridge

  • 2.5 blocks of lard… we use very little each time we cook so it lasts ages
  • 1.5 jars of jam currently in use (1 mixed fruit & 1 apricot)
  • 9 eggs (back logging of eggs, I dont pay attention to the dates on the box… if its fine… its edible)
  • 1.5 tubs of margarine… finally getting through the back log of marg
  • 6 little tomatoes… gorgeous for soup… 39p at ALDI … FYI
  • a handful of spring onions
  • 2 pints of milk

Other… lying around etc… waiting to pounce

  • 5 medium onions
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • a handful of cabbage… enough to go with the dinner tonight
  • 1/3 of a block of butter… this will be gone by Tuesdays shopping day
  • herbs/ spices/ seasoning/ mango chutney

…and last but not least… a ‘black market’ box of 12 mini eclairs for sunday high tea.
