Hunt pie

Cooking time: 35 minutes


  • 3/4 to 1 pint of water (in which lentils soaked)
  • 2oz chopped leek
  • 3/4lb chopped root vegetables and cabbage
  • 4 oz lentils (soaked overnight)
  • 2oz minced meat (we used beef)
  • 1/2 tsp meat or vegetable extract (like marmite or bovril etc)
  • salt and pepper

Pastry ingredients:

  • 2oz oatmeal
  • 20z flour
  • 1 level tsp baking powder
  • water to mix
  • salt
  • 1 dessertspoon chopped mint and parsley

This dish makes 4 adult helpings…. or 2 adults 2 children and a toddler with a weeny bit left…. which Master N kindly volunteered to polish off.


  1. Bring water to the boil, add leek, vegetables, lentils, meat extract, seasoning.
  2. Put on pan lid and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stire regularly to prevent sticking
  3. Make pastry and press into a round, place on top of the meat, vegetables etc and replace lid
  4. Cook for a further 15 to 20 minutes
  5. Lift pastry with a slice, slide meat etc, into a dish, put pastry on top, sprinkle with chopped parsley and mint and serve with mashed potato
